Evaluation of Let's Communicate Together

Date: July 2014 - November 2015
Client: The Children's Society
Rachel evaluated the Let's Communicate Together project, a Lottery funded project which provided an 11-week training course for parents and carers of pre-school children with speech, language or communication needs (SLCN).

The programme was unusual in focussing on the skills of parents/carers, rather than those of the child. It aimed to have a long-term impact on children’s speech and language, as a result of parents/carers implementing the strategies they learn over a protracted period.

Through discussion groups and one-to-one interviews with participating parents and carers, volunteer trainers and staff, Rachel examined the achievements of the programme in the context of the target outcomes agreed with Big Lottery, and against its wider aims.

This included examining the differing impacts of various elements of the training, and the potential to widen the reach of the training (to different types of families, and to children whose SLCN are influenced by a wider range of factors), including by adjusting delivery methods and the emphasis on its different elements.

The Children's Society used the evaluation's outcomes to inform discussions with other organisations interested in delivering the programme.
