Papworth Research & Consultancy evaluated service user involvement within the NCSI (The National Cancer Survivorship Initiative), which aimed to improve services and support for people affected by cancer.
We trained people affected by cancer to work with us as Co-Researchers: planning the evaluation; developing research tools; and undertaking fieldwork.
The evaluation methodology involved focus groups and semi-structured interviews with the Chairs of the seven workstreams within the NCSI, other workstream members and service user representatives, collecting data relating to the following issues:
Positive and negative impact of user involvement on NCSI workstream activity;Positive and negative impact of user involvement on service users;Barriers and facilitators to effective engagement of service users.
Our report made recommendations for the future of the NCSI (identifying responsibility for implementing each recommendation).
